FAQ – Autism Classes
How are places allocated in an AS Class?
Places are offered in line with the school’s admission policy. All students must have a letter of eligibility from the NCSE for acceptance to an AS class.
Is there a separate application for an AS Class place?
No, incoming first year applications open in October each year and you should apply here. Transfer applications open in April on our website for all other years
What is the support in place for an autism class?
Autism classes are limited to 6 students per class. Each class has two inclusion assistants in the room to support these 6 students. Students in the AS classes are situated close to a sensory room and toilet facilities.
What curriculum is available for students in the AS classes?
Students in an AS class have access to the same learning programmes that are available to students in the mainstream placements. In BETSS these are L2LP, Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate Established. Subject teachers teach their subject in the AS classes during timetabled classes. This means there are multiple teachers in the class each day teaching their subject content.
How are students in AS classes integrated into the school?
All students in the AS classes have a space in mainstream in their respective year groups. This allows for a hybrid approach for students to take part in mainstream lessons and use the support of the AS class when required. Students in AS classes also have the opportunity to socialise and integrate at break and lunch time during the day.
How is technology incorporated into AS classes?
BETSS is an iPad school. All students have their own devices. This is also the case for students in an AS class.
How does the school communicate with parents of students in an AS class?
The school produces 3 reports per year through VS Ware for all parents. This is also the case for students in an AS class. Daily updates are provided through notes in the student journal for parents and phone calls and meetings take place between parents and the AS class coordinator.
